Coming to Court

Arrive at court on time, and be aware that different courthouses have different rules. All courts require a security screening to enter, and a search for prohibited items. Do not bring any kind of pocketknife, box opener, or weapon to court – it will be confiscated.

Rules on cellphones, cameras, and computers vary by courthouse with some prohibiting all of the above. Check with the clerk of the circuit court and leave banned items in your car or at home.

Dress appropriately – wear neat, clean, conservative clothing. See-through blouses, drooping pants, and excessive cleavage are fine for going to a club but not for standing in front of a judge.

Show respect for the court – the Judge should be addressed as “Your Honor”, police officers as “officer” or by their rank/title like “Lieutenant” or “Trooper”. Others in the courtroom like the prosecutor or State’s attorney can be addressed as “Sir” or Ma'am”

If you have completed any required evaluation, traffic school, or counseling bring proof of completion to court.
